There’s no bad weather, only the wrong skincare.
When your environment changes, the right ingredients at the right time make all the difference for your skin. Just as you change your light sweater for a heavy parka in the winter, your skincare should also change to keep your skin protected and healthy looking year-round.
Resilient skin, built over time.
Stark makes small-batch climate-adaptive skincare inspired by resilient Boreal plants, so you can help your skin get stronger with every season.
Made for YOUR weather.
Most skincare is made in one climate and expected to work in all of them. But winter in California is nothing like winter in Canada. Jess, Stark's founder & formulator, lives in Western Quebec / Eastern Ontario, a place known to have some of the most dramatic seasonal weather fluctuations in the world. From smoggy springs and hot tropical summers, to gorgeous autumnal bliss and Arctic winters, this is the world we know best... a state of constant change.
Stark formulates for what actually stresses skin...
Such as extreme cold, wind, pollution, indoor heat & VOCs, seasonal shifts and travel. We have been creating climate-adaptive skincare since 2011, helping your skin transition through hot, polluted city days to -40°C winters with our award-winning formulas. (Read our full philosophy here)
An ingredient-snob's dream come true.
15+ years of perfecting these formulas have made Stark products move far beyond "clean / green" formulas. Each formula pairs Canadian botanicals like cranberry, edelweiss, snow mushroom and sea buckthorn with research-backed antioxidants and actives, such as vitamin C, encapsulated retinol or resveratrol, plus ingredients like bisabolol, panthenol and ceramides to support the skin barrier. (An ingredient-snob's dream!) Plus, Stark routines stay simple, with multi-intentional products rather than endless steps. (Perhaps this is why we won "Best Natural Brand Canada" at the 2026 BSL Awards.)
As Seen In
Hi! I'm Jess Lafleur, founder, formulator and doer of most things at Stark.
My happy place has always been the woods and shore along the Ottawa River, where I grew up. As a kid, I mixed river clay, sumac and clover flowers into spa days for my Barbie. (She'd earned it after a long day of digging with her Tonka trucks.)
I studied French herbalism in my early 20s, then moved into Montreal's fashion industry hoping to work in sustainable fashion. But skincare was always my true love, and I kept mixing facial oils for my friends.
I found that "natural" brands didn't work for me, and "active" skincare was too harsh, especially in winter. My friends and I watched our oily, breakout-prone summer skin turn sensitized and flaky half the year. It reminded me of the Nordic saying, "There's no bad weather, just bad clothing." Why weren't our routines adapting with the seasons?
When I confided my secret dream of a skincare line to my then-boyfriend, he told me to go for it. So I did. (Then I married him and we had our son.) After earning a university degree in Environmental Studies, I built on my herbalist background with clinical aromatherapy and a diploma in advanced skincare formulation, and I was ready to launch Stark!
Stark's Muse
After quitting my job as a buyer at a fashion start-up, there were many long walks along the Lachine Canal (in all kinds of weather!)
This is when Stark's muse was discovered: Riverside plants that survive brutal winters and hot, humid summers.
Back before 2011, observing how these plants are able to withstand constant fluctuation, the philosophy with how I formulate and how I want to approach skincare, was born.
Yes. What some consider "weeds" are essentially Stark's muse! But I see these as un-fussy, tenacious plants, built to thrive and adapt in our harsh climate. (Just like our ancestors, they're just built different!)
Stark's Promise
Over the years, Stark's craftsmanship remains a top priority. Formulas are refined rather than launching endless new products, we continue to optimize ingredient selection based on minimizing the environmental pressures that the beauty industry poses and we stay on top of industry research and developments. It's our job to know this stuff, and make it easier for you to choose products that align with your lifestyle and values.
Stark's promise: small-batch botanical-based skincare bolstered by lab actives, created to help your skin become more resilient over time.
(Plus our products just smell and feel great, too!)
"Best Natural / Organic Brand Canada"
Stark won the Beauty Shortlist Award for best Natural/Organic Brand Canada in 2026, as well as 11 Best in Class product awards at the prestigious Beauty Shortlist Awards!
