Hyaluronic Acid: What It Actually Does (And Why It's Not the Only Thing That Hydrates)

I need to start with a small confession. For about a decade now, I have watched hyaluronic acid become the one ingredient everyone can name. It is on the front of the bottle, in the ad, in the caption, in the mouth of every 24-year-old telling you your skin is "dehydrated, not dry" (a real thing, but not the point right now). And every time, I think the same thing: it is a lovely molecule. It is also not magic, and it is definitely not the only way to put water into your skin.
So let's talk about it properly. What it is, what it really does, the one claim about it that drives me a little bit up the wall, how to use it without wrecking your evening routine, and where it genuinely shines (spoiler: your lips). And because I don't make a standalone hyaluronic acid serum and I get asked why constantly, I'll be honest about that too.

What is hyaluronic acid, and what does it actually do?
Hyaluronic acid (say it "hi-uh-lur-ON-ic," and yes, everyone quietly panics about the pronunciation, you are not alone) is a molecule your body already makes. You have it in your skin, your joints, your eyes. Your skin holds roughly a third of the whole supply. It is not exotic or borrowed from some rare plant. It is you.
Its whole purpose, the thing it does all day without being asked, is hold onto water. In skincare language it is a humectant, which just means it grabs water molecules and keeps them hanging around in the upper layers of your skin so everything looks plumper, softer, and less like a wool sweater at 30 degrees. The Cleveland Clinic describes it as one of the best water-binding molecules there is, natural or synthetic. As we get older we make less of it, which is part of why skin gets drier and thinner with time. Topping it up from the outside is the logic behind every HA serum on the shelf.
One thing worth knowing, because it explains a lot of confusion later: hyaluronic acid comes in different molecular sizes. The smaller versions can sink in a little and hydrate below the surface. The bigger ones mostly sit on top and form a soft film that slows water from evaporating off your face. Neither is better. They just do slightly different jobs, and most good formulas use a mix.
Does hyaluronic acid really hold 1000 times its weight in water?
Here is the claim you have seen a thousand times: hyaluronic acid holds up to 1000 times its weight in water. It is on nearly every product, mine included in spirit, because it sounds incredible.
And here is where I get to be the annoying honest one. That number does not really hold up under a microscope. When independent labs have actually measured how much water non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid binds under normal conditions, the figure comes back dramatically lower, often closer to roughly its own weight, not a thousand times it. The big "1000x" number tends to come from crosslinked forms (think injectable fillers) or lab conditions that don't match your bathroom shelf.
Do I think this makes HA useless? Not at all. It is still a genuinely good humectant. But I am not going to print a number on a jar that I can't stand behind, and I think you deserve to know that the headline stat is more marketing than measurement. You can Google this one yourself. I would rather you did.
This matters for a practical reason, not just a principled one. If you believe HA is an infinite water sponge, you assume it can only ever help. It cannot. Which brings me to the part almost nobody mentions.
The part nobody tells you: hyaluronic acid can backfire in dry air
Humectants work by pulling water toward themselves. In a nice humid room, they pull it out of the air. Lovely.
But when the air is bone dry, and I mean Canadian-January, furnace-blasting, static-in-your-hair dry, there is not much water in the air to grab. So a humectant sitting on your face can start pulling moisture up from the deeper layers of your own skin instead, and then that water just evaporates off the top. You can actually end up tighter and more parched than before you started. Dermatologists and formulators talk about this openly. It is the whole reason the golden rule for HA is "apply to damp skin and then seal it with an oil or moisturizer." The damp skin gives it water to hold. The seal on top stops that water escaping.
I formulate for people who live where winter means business. Indoor heating for six months. Skin that already feels like it is being slowly freeze-dried. In that setting, an HA serum used wrong is not neutral. It can make things worse. That is not HA being bad. It is HA being misunderstood.
This is a big reason my hydration serum, Equinox is not built around hyaluronic acid at all. I leaned on a bull kelp ferment, sodium PCA, glycerin, aloe, hydrolysed oats, panthenol, and a few other humectants and soothers that hydrate reliably without the same tightness-then-rebound some people get from HA in cold, dry conditions. If HA has let you down before, or made your face feel weirdly tight in winter, it may not be your skin failing. It may just be the wrong humectant for your climate.
Where does hyaluronic acid come from? Natural sources and how it's made
People love to ask about hyaluronic acid natural sources, usually hoping the answer is "a flower." It is a fair thing to wonder.
The most natural source of HA is, genuinely, you. Your own body. Beyond that, there are foods that either contain it or help your body make its own: bone broth (from the connective tissue), organ meats if you are into that, fermented soy like miso and natto, soy more broadly (the isoflavones seem to nudge your own production along), and antioxidant-rich things like berries and leafy greens that support the whole system. Eating your way to plumper skin is a slow game, but it is not nothing.
The hyaluronic acid in your serums, though, is almost never scraped off a plant. Historically it came from rooster combs, which, yes, exactly what it sounds like. These days the good stuff is made through bacterial fermentation, which is a vegan-friendly lab process where microbes are fed sugar and produce HA. That is not a dirty secret. Fermentation-derived HA is clean, consistent, and kinder to make. I just think "natural" is doing a lot of quiet lying on skincare packaging in general, so I would rather tell you how the sausage gets made.
And here is the thing I really want you to walk away with: hyaluronic acid is one humectant among many. Glycerin. Sodium PCA. Panthenol. Kelp and other marine extracts. Snow mushroom, which is a botanical humectant I use in my Solstice barrier balm precisely because it holds water beautifully. If a brand acts like HA is the only path to hydrated skin, they are either not paying attention or they are counting on you not to.
How to layer hyaluronic acid with retinol and vitamin C
If you do use a hyaluronic acid serum, and plenty of people love theirs, the layering questions are the ones I get most. Let's sort them out.
Hyaluronic acid before or after vitamin C? Vitamin C, especially the classic L-ascorbic kind, likes to go onto clean, dry skin first so it can do its thing. So the usual order is: vitamin C first, give it a minute, then hyaluronic acid onto skin you have re-dampened, then seal. Board-certified dermatologists like Dr. Joshua Zeichner suggest exactly this, putting the pH-sensitive actives down first on dry skin, then re-wetting before the HA. (My own vitamin C, City, uses a gentle, stable, oil-based form of vitamin C that is far less fussy about all of this, but that is a story for another post.)
Hyaluronic acid before or after retinol? This one is more flexible than the internet makes it sound. HA can act as a little buffer that softens retinol's sting, so a lot of people apply HA first, let it dry down, then apply retinol. The one thing to watch: retinol soaks in more aggressively on damp skin, so if you are sensitive, let the HA dry before the retinol goes on, or your skin can get red and irritated. If your skin is well used to retinol already, you can flip it and press HA on afterward to buffer the dryness. The one universal rule, whatever you layer: thin to thick, and give HA damp skin plus a seal on top. Naked HA on dry skin with nothing over it is the number one way people accidentally dry themselves out.
Hyaluronic acid before and after: what to honestly expect
When people search "hyaluronic acid before and after" they are usually hoping to see a face transform. So let me set expectations like a friend and not an ad.
The genuine, same-day "before and after" with HA is real but modest: skin looks dewier, feels softer, fine lines from dehydration look a bit less obvious because they are literally plumped with water. That is a nice thing. It is also temporary and surface-level. It is not remodelling your skin. It is not erasing a wrinkle at the root. When the water goes, the effect softens.
I say this because the gap between what a product promises and what it delivers is exactly what leaves you with a cabinet full of half-used bottles and a general sense that you got played. Hydration is worth doing. It just is not a plot twist. Skin that is calm, comfortable, and resilient over months beats a dramatic Tuesday-night glow every time.
Is hyaluronic acid safe? Side effects, allergies, and pregnancy
Good news here, mostly.
Side effects. Because your body already makes hyaluronic acid, topical HA is very well tolerated and side effects are rare. The Cleveland Clinic and others describe reactions as uncommon. When people do react to an "HA serum," it is very often something else in the bottle (a preservative, a fragrance, an alcohol) or the dry-air tightness I described earlier, rather than the HA itself.
Hyaluronic acid allergy. A true allergy to hyaluronic acid is genuinely rare, again because it is native to your body. That said, if you have a history of serious allergic reactions to anything, be sensible and patch test a new product before you slather it on. That is just good practice with anything new, HA or not.
Hyaluronic acid when pregnant. This is one of the most common questions I get from customers in their 30s and 40s, and the reassuring answer is that topical hyaluronic acid is generally considered safe during pregnancy. It is a large molecule that mostly stays on the surface without much getting into your bloodstream, and major medical groups do not flag it the way they flag retinoids or strong acids. The caveats: this is about creams and serums, not injectable fillers or oral supplements, which are a different conversation and not studied the same way. And always check the rest of the ingredient list, because the HA might be safe while something else in the formula is not. When in doubt, ask your own doctor or midwife. What about hyaluronic acid under-eye patches?
Those little crescent-moon hydrogel patches you press under your eyes? A lot of them are essentially hyaluronic acid plus water in gel form. They can be a genuinely lovely ten-minute treat. They flood the thin under-eye skin with surface moisture, so puffiness softens and the area looks a touch smoother and more awake for a while.
Emphasis on "for a while." Under-eye patches are a moment, not a fix. They are wonderful before a wedding, a big meeting, or a photo you cannot avoid. They are not really building anything long term. If you want daily care for that area, a proper eye serum you use every morning will do more over time than an occasional patch. So do you actually need a hyaluronic acid serum?
Here is my honest, founder-who-does-not-sell-one answer: probably not as a separate step, no. Not because HA is bad, but because hydration has many good ingredients and HA is just the most famous one. If your current HA serum works for you and your skin feels great, please do not fix what is not broken. I mean that.
But if you have tried HA and felt let down, tight, tingly, weirdly drier in winter, I would gently point you toward a hydration serum built on humectants that behave better in real, dry, cold-climate life. That is exactly what I made Equinox to be.
